Geology Exploration and Personal Statement

Reflections (03/08)

Angeline Tsui:
We had a geology lesson in the morning. We found the relationship between the occurrence of earthquakes, volcanoes, elevation and the ages of stones. We learnt about different plate boundary types such as convergent, divergent and transform. We had also learnt four types of seismic waves. The lesson was fun and interesting. We had a lesson in writing our personal statement in the afternoon. We learnt how to use specific words to engage readers’ senses, sight, hearing, taste and smell. We had also talked about the two essays we had written. The professor was nice and full of humor. We had a great time with him.

Annie Xia:
Today we had further lessons on geology and personal statement. We learnt about tectonic plates and some problems they cause in geology. Personal statement lesson was even more interesting to me, because we learnt about descriptions and extending topic sentences. It was very fun because we got to play around with adjectives and wrote fascinating sentences together with the teacher.

Beatrice Lai:
In the morning, we had a geology lesson with Dr. Ian. This is the last geology lesson and we missed Dr. Ian. He is nice and patient. He always encourages us during the class. I was really fortunate to have such a nice geology teacher. After the geology lesson, it was personal statement lesson. Dr. Conrad taught us that we should write more adjectives in our sentences to make the essay more enriching. I think Dr. Conrad taught well and I can know more writing skills.

Candace Kwan:
Today we had a geology and personal statement lesson. When Ian (our instructor) told us it was the last lesson he would teach before working for Shell, the class was so sad. At the end of the lesson, we all said goodbye and some of us even took pictures with him.
In personal statement lesson today, we read out our drafts of our essays and Conrad gave us constructive comments. He was very supportive of our essays and helped us develop it. At night, we had a surprise. Christine and Stephanie (counselors) bought two ice-cream cakes and shared them with everyone. It was really touching as it is my birthday tomorrow, and it was a great coincidence. I’d just like to use this opportunity to say a huge Thank You! to the teachers and counselors.

Candace Lo:
Geology and personal statement classes were awesome today. In geology, we learnt how to categorize the faults of the tectonic plates, I was really fascinated by how different the faults can be. For example, some tectonic plates have lots of volcanoes while others only have a few or even none. I had a great time in the Personal Statement lesson. We learnt how to use specific words for descriptions.

Cheryl Yuen:
Early this morning, we had a three-hour geology lesson. It was really great. After the lesson, I had learnt how to classify between a huge earthquake and gentle one. Besides, I learnt the formations of earthquakes. I had also learnt to identify the tectonic plates around the world. After this meaningful lesson, we went to have our personal statement lesson, Professor Conrad taught us to add more adjectives before the nouns in order to specify the nouns. He also taught us how to write a paragraph and reminded us not to only tell what happened, but also to show what happened. He also made an example for us to follow. After that, we had to make a group of two people, and to read out our compositions to the other person so that the other person could figure out one’s grammatical mistakes and to figure out what the writer was talking about. He gave us an assignment on writing a complete draft of our chosen question. After that, we had an interesting activity, and it was really great! I enjoyed my life in Stanford University very much.

Cynthia Yip:

Ellian Cheung:

Ingrid Ng:
This morning, we attended geology lessons and learnt to compile geological information together on one map. We looked at world maps of topography, volcano distribution, earthquakes and rocks of different ages. It was an interesting exercise. We developed lots of geology skills. In the afternoon, we continued our lessons on personal statement. We read each other’s pieces and commented. We improved our narrative and descriptive skills. After that, we had some stretching exercises on the common room floor. We inhaled and perspired. I think our abdomen will be more flexible after this.

Iris Chang:

Janice Sung:

Jessica Chow:
This is the eighth day of the Stanford study tour. We had double period of geology lessons in the morning, followed by personal statement lesson in the afternoon. At the beginning of geology lesson, Ian played some games about geology with us in order to revise what we had learnt. Ian also taught us about Plate Tectonics. There were three tippers of plate boundaries; they were Convergent, Divergent and Transform. Ian also taught us about the meaning of earthquake.
After I had my geology lessons in Stanford, I found myself interested in geology. However, this was the last geology lesson that I had in Stanford. At the same time, I am looking forward to the lessons that I am going to have tomorrow.

Jessie Tsui:
We had Geology and Personal Statement lesson today. We learnt about the convergence of tectonic plates and it was intriguing. It was the last lesson of geology and I enjoyed the lessons as I hadn’t been studying geography since F.2 and it was like meeting old friends again. The field trip was also memorable and it was my first field trip and probably the last in my life. Professor Scott was our teacher of Personal Statement and we continued the lecture this lesson. He taught us in a lively way and we listened to him attentively. I am looking forward to next lesson and I would cherish the remaining days.

Kennes Hung:
Today we had geology lesson. We learnt about volcano, earthquake, rock, boundary and elevation etc. It was very interesting and useful. It can be applied to our daily life. In the afternoon, we had Professor Conrad’s lesson. He taught us how to use adjectives to abound the sentences. He was very funny and nice. He gave us another assignment. I need to put effort on it to make a better essay.

Laetitia Wu:
We had our second lesson on writing personal statements today. Our professor taught us about descriptive writing—how to ‘show, not (just) tell’. He taught us how to delve deeper from using general words to specific ones in describing people, places and events. In my opinion, descriptive writing requires observation and imagination. We must always be aware of everything around us, we must take a step back and observe, so that we can have an accumulation of interesting accounts. Only then can we build on this store, to imagine more, and then go on to write more. Sometimes I move so fast in my daily life that I can barely notice the little interesting details of life. I must have missed out on a lot. I realize that sometimes we must slow down and take not of the subtleties. This I will work on and I hope, in time, with practice, I would be able to become a better writer.

Larissa Tang:
Today, again, was a busy day. In the morning, we went for the geology lesson. This lesson was quite fun. The professor gave us some maps so that we could identify the rock ages, volcanoes, earthquakes and find out the elevation of land above sea level. This also helped us learn how to read maps and I believed I would study maps better than before. There were also animations in the PowerPoint and this made the atmosphere more relaxing. In the afternoon, we went to attend the personal statement workshop. We learnt how to make the sentences richer by adding more specific words in our essays. The professor also helped us in our assignments and gave us comments. I hoped my essay would improve in the near future. Overall, I think the professors in Stanford were nice and friendly. They always wore a smile on their faces. We all felt comfortable with them.

Linda Cheng:
We had the last geology lesson today. We learnt more about plate boundaries and plate tectonics through group activities. We also attended another Personal Statement lesson, in which we learnt more about narrative and descriptive writing, so that our compositions could appeal to readers more by engaging all their five senses. We learnt more about applying these skills to writing through class discussion. We did some work out exercises after we came back to the dorm. I am not the sporty kind of people, so it was a rather tough time for me. But I learnt more about overcoming our limitations, and who knows, I will try them out when I go back to Hong Kong. I hope I can become stronger!

Pinky Kwan:
Today we had our last geology lesson with our instructor, Ian. He prepared four different maps for us to study the characteristics of different plates. I was in charge of the map about the distribution of earthquakes on the Earth. I found that earthquakes usually happened near the contact between two plates. After we studied each map separately, we combined the data to work on the relationships between earthquake, volcano, rock’s age and sea level. I was amazed by the result and then Ian taught us more about the contact of different plates. In the afternoon, we attended the personal statement workshop and it was as interesting as the last one. I enjoyed it a lot and learnt more skills of writing. After talking with our instructor, I had more ideas for my personal statement. I hope that I can improve my writing skills in the next lesson.

Rachel Kwan:
This morning, we went to have geology lesson after we finished our breakfast. Ian taught us about earthquakes. Earthquake is classified into 10 levels. If it is in level eight, it will be very serious and it can damage at least a hundred metres of place. In the lesson, we did an exercise which we needed to color different classification on the given map worksheet. We had drawn the elevation of sea level, common of earthquakes and times of volcanic eruption happened. After that we had writing lesson in the afternoon. Dr Conrad taught us how to make general words into specific words. For example, clothes change to T-shirt. We also had a short PE lesson after that, the tutor Wendy taught us some simple methods of exercising. I think I had a wonderful day in Stanford.

Renee Yeh:
I really loved the geology lesson today. Ian talked about seismology and it was so fascinating, I really learnt a lot about the plates moving, and the development of the earth. I’m really going to Dr. Ian. I learnt a lot about how to describe people in the personal statement lesson. We did a few exercises and the class gave ideas and Dr. Conrad wrote them on the board. The class described a really messy room and it was great fun.

Rosa Li:
We had geology class today, and this is the first time that I think geology is interesting. Before, I thought that a rock is just a rock and there is nothing special at all about it. However, today, our professor prepared an interesting activity for us. We had to look at four different world maps each showing the topography, rock age, seismic and volcanic activity respectively, and plate boundaries. Then, we had to compile all the data into one single map. This task really requires critical and analytical thinking, and we solved the problems all together as a team. I found out that there are a lot of faces of geology, that it’s not just about rocks and their formation. There is a touch of science to it and this is what I like. That was the last geology lesson we will have, here in Stanford, and I’m glad to say that this lesson changed my view towards geology, from impartial bordering dislike, to interest.

Selena Leung:
After we had a weekend for rest, we need to continue our main purpose of the tour, to learn. So we went for the geology lesson which is about plate tectonics and the formation of earthquakes after our breakfast. The teacher used an interesting method to start the lesson. He played a simple game to give us some information about earthquakes. I like this method of teaching and I feel more interested in geology after attending his lessons. After lunch, we attended the personal statement class. We learnt to enhance our sentences by using adjectives to describe the nouns in descriptive writing. I like this lesson since I was not good in writing description. Before dinner, we did some exercise to warm up our body. I don’t think it is fun since I have no interest in doing that kind of exercise. I am looking forward to the activities tomorrow.

Stephanie Chow:
We had a whole day of lessons today. We first had a geology lesson in the morning, which was a continuation of the lesson last time. We studied tectonics plated and earthquakes. In the afternoon, we took our personal statement lesson with Dr. Conrad. He led us to learn to write descriptive passage through a living way. Our third lesson did not involve academic stuff; it was a fitness lesson instead. We stretched and relaxed our tensed muscle. It calmed me down and we all had a wonderful day.

Theodora Yu:

Tiffany Tsah:
We had geology lesson and personal statement class today. In geology, we learnt about plate boundaries, which can be classified as convergent, divergent and transform. We had also learnt four types of seismic waves in which P waves moves faster than S waves. As for the personal statement lesson, we learnt that the personal essay can be written in narrative and descriptive form. Lastly, we can also appeal to readers’ five senses, including sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell in our essays.

Valerie Tang:

Vicky Cheung:
Today was great, we learnt lots of things. In the geology lesson, we studied the map and learnt about tectonic plates. It was very fun coloring our own map in groups. I was in charge of observing the map which showed the age of the rocks near the sea, and it was categorized by different colors. In the personal statement lesson, we learnt about narratives and descriptions.

Victoria Chan:

Victoria Kwok:
Today is the eighth day of our trip, we were all very familiar to the campus already therefore we walked very fast to the place where we are going to have our lessons. In the morning, we attended the geology lesson. Professor Ian taught us about different ages and the placement of rocks. He also taught us about different levels of earthquakes. I think the topic is quite familiar to me and so I have great interest in attending this class. In the afternoon, we attended the lesson working on our personal statement. This lesson, we all handed in our homework on time and the professor continued talking about different writing skills. I enjoyed this lesson very much because I did not have a specific lesson on writing before. I really wanted to improve my English skills on writing.

Daily Schedule (02/08)

- Hike to the dish (for those who had finished their assignments only)
- Work on Personal Statements
- Visit to Cantor Art Museum
- Jazz Festival

Work Hard, Play Hard

Reflections (02/08)

Angeline Tsui:
We did our personal statements in the morning. I wrote one essay on my summer camp in UK and another one on how I write essays. It was fun and enjoyable. We then visited the Cantor Art Museum. There were many great collections. The tour guide was nice and cheerful. She explained to us clearly and patiently. We learnt the history of the Stanford family and took loads of photos. We went to the Stanford jazz festival at night. There were four performers. They played great and amazing. The show was enjoyable and relaxing.

Annie Xia:
Today we went to the Cantor Art Museum and saw lots of interesting pieces of art. We saw all kinds of different and unique artwork from all kinds of cultures. For example, we saw aboriginal American, European, and contemporary art, etc. What seemed most amazing to me though was the room for the Stanford family including the painting with all of them in it, the jewels, and the stuffed owl.

Beatrice Lai:
We finished our personal statement homework with our great efforts and visited the Art museum in Stanford today. We saw an awesome building when we arrived. When we stepped into the museum, we saw two sculptures on the ground floor. Upstairs, there were a few rooms which show different types of Arts such as the bronze sculptures and folk art. The museum was gorgeous though it was not so huge. It collects many craft work around the world. After the visit and dinner, we enjoyed the jazz music presented by the Heath Brothers. We all enjoyed the music in a relaxed mood. It was really a good day.

Candace Kwan:
Today we went to a jazz concert. The Heath brothers were great, I really enjoyed their performance. Before I went there, I did not really have an idea of what jazz was, but now I think it’s really enjoyable. I hope I can go to another jazz concert soon. In the afternoon, we went to Stanford’s Cantor Art museum. Our tour guide, Gretchen was really fun to be around. In the beginning, she asked us what kind of art we were interested in so she could tailor the tour for us. The best part was learning about Stanford’s family portrait. We learnt that the painting was fiction, as most of the people in it had never met in real life. The artist even painted himself in it, which most of us found to be very amusing.

Candace Lo:
I have been looking forward to going to the Memorial Church for Sunday Mass ever since I saw it on the tour around the campus. I was really excited when I knew I was able to attend a Mass there. The priest was really funny and friendly, he conducted the Mass very well even though he seemed quite young. I had a lot of time to admire the architecture of the inside of the church. The mosaics on the walls were absolutely beautiful.

Cheryl Yuen:
Today, after having breakfast, we had to do our assignment on personal statement. The first one is on writing biography about our writing experience. I found it quite easy to handle it. After that, I did the second assignment on an important extracurricular activity. I found it a bit harder than the first assignment. I finished it before ten, and went to the bookstore to buy some souvenirs. I bought some clothes and some stationery. They are really cool. After having lunch with my friends, we went to the Stanford Art Centre. I did not have a lot of interest in Arts, but I tried to pay attention to it. I then went to the church, it was totally great. And after that, I went to the souvenir shop to buy some souvenirs. I bought a pencil and a notebook. Overall, I enjoyed today’s trip a lot.

Cynthia Yip:
We have spent our whole morning working on our personal statement assignment. Originally, we could go hiking if we had finished all of our work. The personal assignment homework had taken us a long time to finish, therefore we needed to change our schedule and cancel this activity. I think that I must work faster next time. After lunch, we visited the Art Museum inside Stanford. At first, I felt the pictures were quite boring. I soon found interesting art works in other parts of the museum, like the ‘The thinker’ and some other weird art works. I found that art is really a great human discovery, which affects our lives. At night, we attended a Jazz Concert. The concert was fine and I found that jazz is a good kind of music to listen.

Ellian Cheung:
After working on our personal statements, we visited the Cantor art museum where we can find paintings or sculptures from native American to contemporary ones could be found. All the artwork there was very creative and I am very impressed. At night, we went to the Dinkelspiel Auditorium for the show, The Heath Brothers. The type of music performed was Jazz music, and it has made us all very relaxed. Apart from the ventilation in the auditorium not being good enough, the show was a great one.

Ingrid Ng:
After a night’s work on our draft personal statements, some of us followed our counselor to hike to the Dish. It was a cool morning with some sunshine. We walked onto hills roamed freely by adorable squirrels. We saw strange birds preying. Although the grass was not as green as it would be in spring, and we did not see any horses on the far hills, we had a great time hiking and feeling nature. We saw the Dish, which was a satellite. It was great to exercise in the early morning. In the afternoon, we visited the Cantor Arts Museum, which contained many paintings and sculptures of different origins. There was a “David” man; he looked so much like a real human that it was frightening. Afterwards, we went to mass in the Church. I enjoyed the music, which was really heart-throbbing. In the evening, we went to the Jazz festival in the auditorium. The audience was so excited by the performance. It was an extraordinary cultural event.

Janice Sung:
Today, we went to the Stanford Art Museum. The tour guide briefly explained the history of the Stanford’s family and different countries’ art and statues, etc. Through observing different arts, I gain more knowledge and culture of their countries. As the time is limited, I did not have the opportunity to observe all the arts in the museum. However, I can still observe the more famous one. Although I did not have the chance to enjoy all the paintings, I did not feel regret, as I deeply believe that one day I may have an opportunity to go there again.

Jessica Chow:
This is the seventh day of the Stanford study tour. We continued to work on our personal statement that we had not yet finished. Some of us had finished their work the night before, so that they can go hiking to the Dish in the morning and also went to the mass in the afternoon. I had worked on my personal essays for the entire morning.
After having lunch, we went to the art museum in the Stanford school campus. There are lots of 18th, 19th and 20th century’s art pieces exhibited there. I like the art of the 18th century the most. It is colourful, magnificent and clear-cut. Also, the costumes the people wearing were luxurious. These are the reasons why I liked art of the 18th century the most. We watched the jazz concert after dinner. Though I did not know who the performers are, I enjoyed the jazz concert very much. I liked the old man who played the saxophone. He enjoyed what he was playing. I think he was so cute that he tried to make the audience laugh. I think this is the most enjoyable day among these two weeks of the Stanford study tour.

Jessie Tsui:
We went to the Cantor Art Museum in Stanford today. I realized the different characteristics of art production from different period. I learned to appreciate different cultures with their own values too. Then, I attended a Catholic mass in the memorial church. The church was decorated luxuriously. I was touched by the massice church and the ceremony was different from the ones in Hong Kong. The priest was nice and hilarious while the choir sang extremely well and the songs were great. At night, we went to watch the Jazz show and the performance was flawless. I would never forget these experiences and I would treasure all the good times we had together.

Kennes Hung:
Today, I finally finished my personal statement. I wrote two compositions which were about my extracurricular activities and my feeling towards writing. Practice make perfect. I found my writing skills improved after so many practices. In the afternoon, we went to the Cantor Art Museum. I was totally shocked when the sculptures caught my eyes since they were no different with real persons. The painting was great too. After dinner, we went to watch the show, The Heath Brothers. It was performed by the Stanford jazz group. I enjoyed the show very much. It was wonderful.

Laetitia Wu:
In the morning, a few of us got to hike to the Dish with our counselor. I have been looking forward to the hike a lot since I love hiking. The difference about this trail and a lot of trails in Hong Kong is that the area is much more open, and there is such a vast expanse of land—fields of grass stretch out in all directions and never seem to end. During the hike, I saw a lot of squirrels going on with their daily activities, and I saw a lot of areas cordoned off for research or projects. I thought a lot about nature conservation. If this area had not been conserved well, all the squirrels would have been dead and the whole ecosystem could not have been sustained with just a touch of human intervention. It was then that I realize how vulnerable nature is to our destruction. This is our earth—it has immense power to wreck civilization with a plethora of disasters—earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, but it is also extremely prone to changes, especially in the climate, and the ecosystem. We all are responsible for it as there are still generations ahead of us. If we have not already started energy-saving measures, we should start now, because it is really getting too late.

Larissa Tang:
Today was Sunday, and it meant we could rest. In the morning, I stayed in my room to finish my personal statement assignments. It was not hard, but it took time. Luckily, I was able to finish them on time. In the afternoon, we went to the Stanford art museum. The paintings there were beautiful, and there were sculptures from famous artists. There were also different arts of different countries, and we could all learn their history and customs at the same time. Later, we also went to the Church. It was grand and I felt very calm and peaceful in there. At night, we went to attend the Jazz concert. The performers were all very professional and I appreciated their hard work. This day was a relaxed day.

Linda Cheng:
After working on our personal statement in the morning, all of us visited the Cantor Arts Center inside Stanford. As I am an Art and Design student, I was particularly interested in these exhibits and paid my full attention to the tour guide, Norman. There are many exhibits and I wish I could have had more time to look around and learn more. There aren’t many times that you can see the real artwork. Then we went to the Jazz performance at the Dinkelspiel Auditorium. I anticipated the performance quite much because I love jazz. It was really nice but all of us were really tired after the day, so some of us actually fell asleep during the performance. Nevertheless, this was quite a day vibrant with an artistic touch.

Pinky Kwan:

Rachel Kwan:
Actually, we had free time this morning, but we need to finish the personal statement assignment. My personal statement briefly talked about a meaningful experience. After that, I went to the bookstore and I bought some folders and a jumper. When we finished lunch, we went to the Stanford art centre. The tour guide Norman took us to walk around the centre. There are many collections of arts inside the centre. There is also a hall which has Chinese collection of arts and there are Chinese traditional clothes inside the room. I think the clothes come from the Qing dynasty. In the afternoon, we went to the memorial church and attended a catholic mass. The choir sang the songs lively. The priest talked jokes too. To conclude, I think it’s a good experience to attend a mass in foreign countries even though I’m not a catholic.
Renee Yeh:
The jazz concert was the best part of the day for me. I really loved the concert as I am a musician myself. My favorite song was the song that the Heath brothers wrote for their brother (former bassist) who passed away a few years ago. The song really touched my heart and I was nearly moved to tears. The art museum was also great fun. My favorite piece of art was the “six sad men of Calais”. The six men were willing to sacrifice themselves for their village. I think that this is such a courageous deed and that they should be remembered forever for their bravery.

Rosa Li:
It was a relaxing Sunday today. After having breakfast, we started working on our personal statements. One of the assignments that Professor Conrad gave us was a writing biography. He gave us a lot of guiding questions as aid. I have never thought of a lot of them before, like, why I like writing and what atmosphere do I most like writing in. Throughout the whole writing process, I got to know more about myself, for example, I really tried to judge my strengths and weaknesses and I enjoyed the whole process, which is really rare for me. Although I do not love writing that much, writing personal essays really helps me understand myself more, and to reflect on things which I have learnt. I will definitely try to write more.

Selena Leung:
Although I had finished my homework for the personal statement last night, I still need to organize the photos of these few days for submission. Therefore, I kept on doing my work in my free time in the morning. During the afternoon, we went to the Stanford Art Museum. There were many different kinds of artwork displayed, such as contemporary, classical and so on. The sculptures are so realistic and I thought some of them were real man before I looked at it carefully. Since I did not go to the church after visiting the museum, I stayed in my room packing up my stuff. And we went to the auditorium at night to watch the Stanford Jazz show. I have no interest in this kind of music, so I do not think it is interesting. However, some of my friends enjoyed the show. Maybe I should try to listen to different kinds of music to increase my interest in music.

Stephanie Chow:
We rested a bit on Sunday. After we completed our personal statement homework, we were allowed to choose whether to hike to the dish or to take a nap. I slept, and it was a sweet dream. In the afternoon, we went for the Art Museum. We knew more about the Stanford’s family and how artistic they were. Then, we dressed ourselves to attend the Jazz Concert held at night. The performers created a thrilling atmosphere. Everyone must have enjoyed themselves.

Theodora Yu:
After a morning working on the personal statements and assignments, I’ve learnt to manage time properly and wisely. We should finish our work first before starting to play, so that we won’t need to carry burdens when we go to relax. After the tour in the Stanford Art Museum, I understood that we should appreciate different cultures, because they are the main elements of the world. I’ve learnt to read art, how to observe the background, facial expressions and posture of the person in the picture. It was an interesting afternoon and I sincerely hope to visit the Museum again.
The Stanford Jazz Concert at night was the highlight of the day. I was never into much jazz before, but after today, my viewpoint had changed. Jazz was enlightening and never a bore. Sometimes I couldn’t catch the rhythm of the music, but I was still entertained by the looks of enjoyment on the performers’ faces. There were four men: two old mean wearing white caps, a middle-aged man in a nice suit and a young man. Their music was so straightforward and sincere, which touched every audience’s heart. Their music instinct was also strong and they hit the same note accurately at the same time. It was unbelievable. The concert was amazing and the scene of the band playing delightful jazz will stay in my heart forever.

Tiffany Tsah:
We did our personal statement this morning because we need to hand it in to Professor Scott tomorrow. In the afternoon, we went to the Stanford Art Museum, which we had a guided tour on the art work. There are arts of different centuries and cultures which were very fascinating. For the evening activity, we went to a jazz show. It was the first time I have ever attended a performance of jazz. My interest on this type of music was aroused after the show.

Valerie Tang:
Since Laetitia, Ingrid and I finished our personal statement early, we went hiking to the dish in the morning with our counselor, Christine today. The view was spectacular and there were a lot of lovable squirrels. There was also a significant difference in the air quality compared to Hong Kong, as the air was much fresher and cooler. Furthermore, the warm sunshine tops the trip. After lunch, we went to the art museum in Stanford and looked at a lot of great works of art, such as a duplicate of ‘The Thinker’. I learned a lot about art history as well, e.g. neoclassical arts. The museum was definitely a perfect place to spend the afternoon. For the evening, we spent it at the jazz concert of The Heath Brothers. It was marvelous. I loved the drums and the saxophone, they created such angelic music together. I really appreciated what the counselors prepared for us and I enjoyed the day.

Vicky Cheung:
We went to a jazz concert tonight. The musicians are perfect, and they cooperated very well. Their style was very special. The one I appreciated the most was the bassist, because he was young and talented. From this concert, I came to understand the importance of coordination and cooperation among team members and practice makes perfect.

Victoria Chan:
We went to the Stanford Art Museum today. There were many pieces of arts, including some paintings, and even statues. Some of them were quite famous and I have heard them before, such as The Thinker. I was inspired by so many different kinds of arts, they were from many different cultures, some from Native America, some from Egypt, and even from China. I have also learnt a lot about art from our tour guide, such as the history of the paintings, or even history of the museum. However, we didn’t have enough time to walk through the whole museum and just were through it briefly. I hope that sooner or later, I can have another chance to go to this museum again.

Victoria Kwok:
In the morning, I continued to work on my personal statement. There is one question asking about the most important extracurricular activity of mine. At first, I could not think of one. Later on, I thought that I missed the piano very much these days and I think that the most important activity for me is playing the piano. After writing the personal statement, we can all have our own free time. In the afternoon, we went to an art museum to look at different pictures and sculptures. They are very special because each of them has their own ideas and characteristics. I enjoyed this visit very much because there is just a few art museums in Hong Kong. I hope that I can have another chance to visit different art museums. After that, we went to the church to attend a mass. I thought that mass here is totally different from that in Hong Kong. People attending the mass were very free and the priest did not just stand there when he was reading the bible. The songs were beautiful and there were also violins and guitar for decoration. I hope that the church in Hong Kong can be like this because everybody would be freer.
