Reflections (28/07)

Angeline Tsui:
We had an SAT practice this morning. The papers were quite difficult. I realized that I should pay more efforts in brushing up my English the test. We had our geology lesson in the afternoon when Dr. Ian introduced the rock cycle to us. We learnt the formation of rocks from weathering to lithification. The lesson was cool and interesting. I am looking forward to the campfire tonight and I am sure we will all have fun.

Annie Xia:
I was very happy today to be challenged quite a bit by the SAT test that we did. We have nothing like it in Hong Kong and I am really looking forward to being able to learn some tips and tricks about it here at Stanford.

Beatrice Lai:
During our geology lesson today, Dr. Ian introduced basic knowledge about geology such as what composite volcanoes are. After the lesson we went to the Stanford book store which is much bigger than those in Hong Kong! I bought lots of books and stationery. We all had a good time today.

Candace Kwan:
What I enjoyed most today was actually the geology lesson. I take geography at school and have always been interested about the Earth, and Dr. Ian was a very knowledgeable man who had just finished his Stanford graduate degree. I am really looking forward to tomorrow’s field trip.

Candace Lo:
In general, I did not really enjoy anything the best in particular today. I was just happy to be in such a beautiful environment with such a great atmosphere for learning. I am looking forward to a good two weeks here.

Cheryl Yuen:
We did the SAT practice test during the morning session. After I did some of the sections, I felt really tiring since the English sections were much harder than I had ever expected. But for the mathematics sections, they were much better than the English one. After lunch, we attended the Geology class. It was quite interesting indeed, even though I failed to understand some of the terms. We went to the bookstore later in the evening, there were lots of stuffs, but they were quite expensive, that is why I had no intentions to buy them. In conclusion, I enjoyed the day very much and anticipate to tomorrow’s trip.

Cynthia Yip:
After having the SAT exam, I felt dizzy because the paper was much more difficult than what I have expected. I realized that I need to read more so as to level up my English standard.

Ellian Cheung:
This morning, we had our SAT mock test. It was quite difficult, but it was a great experience. I think we will all become more prepared for the SAT exam after this practice. In the afternoon, we had a geology class, which I found very interesting. I hope tomorrow’s weather will be fine, so that the field trip can be held successfully.

Ingrid Ng:
After a refreshing breakfast we went into a classroom for the SAT examination practices. Most Mathematics questions were simple; English questions were more difficult as there was little time to analyze whole paragraphs in 25 minutes. The exercise was practical and could improve my English reading skills. In the afternoon, we listened to Professor Ian as he quickly taught us basic geology: rocks and their formation. The lesson was interesting but I had trouble in distinguishing the age of different rocks. Tomorrow we will go on a field trip to the Marine Headlands to look at rocks in context. We should have great fun while being beginner geologists.

Iris Chang:
We had SAT workshop today, and I found the papers difficult. In order to improve my Maths and English in these following years, I will read more books and do more exercises.

Janice Sung:
Due to the poor results I did in the SAT this morning, I discovered that I should strengthen my vocabulary and read more books in order to improve my English skills. Also, I learnt different forms of rocks in the geology lesson.

Jessica Chow:
We did the SAT exam this morning. It took us three and a half hours which was a very long period of time. I think both English and Mathematics exams were difficult for me and the time limit was a bit short. I felt very exhausted after I did the examination. In the afternoon session, we had been to the Stanford bookstore. I have bought a lot of souvenirs there, including T-shirts, a teddy bear and a magnet for my family and myself. I hope they like the souvenirs I chose. Anyway, I enjoy my day in Stanford very much.

Jessie Tsui:
We have done the SAT practice paper today and it was totally new to me. The format of the test was different from those in Hong Kong. The questions were quite difficult and I could not manage to finish the paper within the time limit. We had the geology lesson in the afternoon and I learnt more about the Rock Cycle which helped prepare us for the field trip tomorrow.

Kennes Hung:
Today we had finished an SAT test. The English test was extremely difficult while the math test was much easier. Yet, I still could not finish it within the time limit. I think I have to improve my time management skills. Dr. Ian introduced various types of rocks to us during the geology lesson. The lesson was fun.

Laetitia Wu:
The most rewarding thing today is that I found out a good lecture really helps a lot. I have always been interested in geology since I was young and would watch documentaries and read articles on it. After today’s lesson, I found out that one lecture beats years of self studying on my own. I learned that ‘learning’ is not simply reading as much as you can. It requires a lot of analysis on the data collected. Today’s lecture helped me smooth out all my concepts and solved some problems I have been pondering for a while. I cannot wait for the field trip tomorrow as it is the first time I would be travelling with an expert! I am sure I will learn a lot.

Larissa Tang:
The second day was a day for studying. In the morning, we went for the SAT tests which lasted for two and a half hours. The mathematics part was alright, but the English part was much more difficult than I had expected. However, I still thought that it was a good practice for us in the summer holiday. In the afternoon, we went for the geology class. I found myself getting more interested in geology after attending this lesson. Although the teacher spoke really fast, I was able to get a brief idea and some important points in geology. I am looking forward to more fun tomorrow!

Linda Cheng:
We had the SAT test today. The mathematics part was pretty simple but the English part was really challenging. I decided to work harder on English after experiencing this mock exam. Now I am anticipating the camp fire tonight. I hope I could take some great shots!

Pinky Kwan:
In the morning, we did a SAT test, which lasted for 2.5 hours. The Maths parts were not very difficult whereas the English parts were really challenging. I learnt that I should improve my English and time planning skills. It was the most rewarding part of today’s activities when we finally submitted it because we had tried our best. Even though we were all very tired after finishing it, we had gained some experiences for the public exams in the future. We would have a field trip tomorrow, in which we could use our knowledge learnt in Geology lesson. I was looking forward to it and I hope that I would enjoy it!

Rachel Kwan:
We had a SAT Standard practice examination in the morning. It took us about 3 hours to finish the whole examination. I found it difficult in the English part but I can manage the mathematics part. We also had a geology lesson in the afternoon, the professor taught us about the structure of the Earth and the differences between rocks and minerals. After this, we went to the Stanford bookshop to buy. I’ve bought some stationeries and a T-shirt. I think I should take more rest tonight since I didn’t sleep well last night.

Renee Yeh:
Today was really satisfying. We had our very first lesson and were able to learn a lot of new things about geology and plate tectonics. Our teacher, Dr. Ian, was very informative and interesting and I was glad to be able to enjoy his experience.

Rosa Li:
The experience of having the SATs is so valuable. From today’s practice, I know more about the format about the examination. I realized that I should learn more vocabularies. The geology lesson was quite rewarding as we learnt a lot on different types of rocks. I hope that I can apply the knowledge during the field trip tomorrow.

Selena Leung:
After completing the SAT practice paper, I realized that the English part of the paper is quite difficult so I should work more on my English. For the mathematics part of the paper, the questions are easier compare to the English part. We attended the geology lesson after lunch. I think the lesson was quite interesting although I have no interest on this subject. We went to the bookstore afterwards, there were a lot of books and souvenirs. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s activities.

Stephanie Chow:
In the morning, we did the SAT test. Although it was challenging, we gained experiences on doing public examinations. Time planning is important to get a good result in exams. We also need a calm mind to read and finish questions carefully. In the afternoon, we went for our first geology lesson. We were told about the different types of rock and rock contacts. We were going to apply the knowledge we learnt today on tomorrow’s field trip. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s field trip!

Theodora Yu:
Today's SAT exam was a reminder for me that there is still much space for improvement in my academic results. I will not be satisfied with the situation now and will do my best to enhance my proof-reading, literary skills and complete the exams in a higher speed.

Tiffany Tsah:
After sitting for a challenging SAT test in the morning, we had our geology lesson in the afternoon. The lessons enriched our knowledge on the subject and I am really looking forward to the field trip at Marin Headlands tomorrow.

Valerie Tang:
We did the SAT mock exam today and I encountered some problems in the vocabulary part of the English test. After the exam, I am more aware of my own standard and the expected standard for universities. Professor Ian, our geology teacher, was very nice and I learnt a lot from his class. I am looking forward to the field trip tomorrow when I can apply the knowledge I learnt from the class.

Vicky Cheung:
Today we did an SAT practice. The English part was hard but I know I shall overcome it in order to get a place in an esteemed university like Stanford. Luckily, the Mathematics part was quite easy. Despite it took me 3 hours to finish the test, I found it worth doing.

Victoria Chan:
Today, we have just taken the SAT practice exam. It is a lot harder than what I have expected, especially the English section. I found it really challenging for me, as for some questions, there are many vocabularies which I don't understand. After this, I realized that I should read more English books in order to train myself. Moreover, we also had the geology lesson today. This helps me to know more about the rock types.

In the morning:, I took the SAT examination. I found that I did not bring my calculator. Luckily, my classmate realized that the iPod touch has the calculator function, so I used the iPod touch for calculation. Afterwards, I discovered that the mathematics sections were easy but the English sections were difficult. In the afternoon, I attended the geology class and I think that it was very interesting. The teachers in Stanford are very nice and they wanted us to ask questions whenever we have anything that we do not understand.
