Angeline Tsui:
We had a writing lesson in this morning. We learnt how to write a personal statement. We learnt to plan our essay using various techniques including brainstorming and idea maps. We had also tried free writing. The lesson was subservience. We went to Stanford Linear Accelerator in the afternoon. Professor White showed us around the campus. He was fun and nice. We then listened to a talk delivered by Professor Martin L. Perl, who was a Nobel Prize winner. He introduced the dark matter, energy and the universe to us. It was both an interesting and informative day.
Annie Xia:
I loved the writing lesson with Dr. Conrad in the morning. He had a lot to say and a lot for us to do. I was surprised by the amount of homework that we got. But in my heart I know it was beneficial for us and that I was able to learn a lot from the experience. At least we come here to learn, not to play!
Beatrice Lai:
We had our Personal Statement lesson this morning. Dr. Conrad taught us how to write a good letter to apply for a place in a university. He said that to write a good essay, we must first do a draft work, thinking what we want to express in our essay. Though we have many assignments to be submitted to Dr. Conrad, I believe it is a valuable experience to brush up my English.
Candace Kwan:
My favourite part of the day was the writing lesson with Dr. Conrad Scott-Curtis. I have always had difficulty generating ideas and finding the best environment to write. However, Dr. Conrad gave me many new ideas on improving myself like using prewriting techniques such as free writing and making mind maps.
Candace Lo:
I also found the Nobel Prize winner’s speech very good. I only wish we could have interviewed him longer because his life story is simply too inspiring and beautiful. It was a pity that we had to leave early due to catching the last bus, because it was a once in a lifetime experience to visit SLAC.
Cheryl Yuen:
We attended the personal statement lesson this morning. We had learnt how to write an essay properly and plan before writing. Dr. Conrad told us to plan and draft before writing. After having lunch, we went to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre by bus. We met with Dr. White, who is friend of Sister Margaret, and showed us the Centre. We then met with Professor Martin, who is the 1995 Nobel Prize (physics) winner. He taught us a lot about the physics theory, like the structure of atoms and the particles. I appreciate him a lot, although I didn’t comprehend what he was talking about. I think I should revise a bit so that I could understand what he was talking about today.
Cynthia Yip:
Today what I like is the SLAC visit. We talked to the famous Nobel Prize winner Professor Martin Perl. We listened to the speech delivered by two successful Hong Kong scientists who work at SLAC. It is really amazing and we are very lucky to have a chance to meet them.
Ellian Cheung:
Today, we had a lesson on personal statement. We have learnt many useful ways of planning an essay. Dr. Scott-Curtis was very nice and humorous, and we all had a great time with him. After that, we had a visit to Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We met with Professor Martin Perl, the Nobel Prize Winner, who talked about dark energy. It was a great learning day.
Ingrid Ng:
Before noon, we had our English writing class, taught by Dr. Scott-Curtis. He cracked a lot of jokes, which was hilarious. We started the English classes with planning. We tried free writing, which was to write continuously for about 13 minutes. It was difficult to stay on track of the topic, but Dr. Scott-Curtis said this was one way to solve writer’s block. I did not think this was the best way for me to think of ideas for my essays, so I may try some other ways like idea maps that Dr. Conrad suggested. In the afternoon, we went to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre. It was a beautiful place with many types of equipment for carrying out research on particles and cosmology. Professor White introduced some objects that were used in experiments in the laboratory. We attended a talk by Professor Martin Perl, the Nobel Prize winner who discovered Tau Lepton. The virtue that aided him in this achievement was persistence, as he persisted in his belief of smaller undiscovered particles. It was a great day.
Janice Sung:
Dr. Conrad’s lesson was the best thing today. He is a very nice teacher and he wanted us to hand a piece of work which we really care about. He gave us time to do homework, and he also tried to cheer you up if you said you really hate the writing.
Jessica Chow:
This is the fifth day of the Stanford study tour. We had lessons in the morning and an outing to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre in the afternoon. I had learnt how to write a statement in the personal statement in the writing lesson. The teacher, Dr. Conrad, taught us about the writing process. It was divided into planning, brainstorming, free writing, idea map and cluster map. These ways make it easier to figure out what you are going to write. The teacher gave us some tasks to complete and hand it in on the coming Monday. Dr. Conrad will teach us about how to write a personal statement essay for a college application and also told us about the essay section of the SAT in the coming lessons. In my point of view, Dr. Conrad gave us a very useful and meaningful lesson. I could make good use of the things that he had taught me when I was working on my comprehension and statements. I think this is the most meaningful and enjoyable part of the day.
Jessie Tsui:
We had the Personal Statement lesson today in the morning and it was far more interesting than I expected. Dr. Conrad was hilarious and nice to us and he taught us lots of useful skills which helped to consolidate my writing. I thought the lesson was beneficial to us since it was always subservient for us like applying for the university and college. We went to visit Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in the afternoon and we were given speeches by several special guests. I learned a lot of knowledge about dark matter and I was more interested in science now.
Kennes Hung:
Today we had our personal statement lesson. We learnt how to write good essays. At the beginning of the lesson, I thought writing a good essay was an extremely hard work. However, after having Dr. Conrad’s lesson, I learnt some skills of writing an essay and I am not that fear of writing now. I really need to read more and write more to improve my English. In the afternoon, we visited SLAC and gained much knowledge about science.
Laetitia Wu:
We went to the SLAC today. It is the first time that I visited a scientific institute of such great importance and we even got to meet Professor Martin Perl, a Nobel Prize laureate in physics; and other great scientists, who gave us great talks. What struck me most is that these scientists are humans as well—they have all gone through ups and downs in life and got such great achievements only through diligence and persistence. When we face criticism, as Professor Perl did during his research, we must learn to stay firm to our beliefs and plough on no matter what. We must always be inquisitive about our world, like Professor Perl, who is still doing research even at his age. In the end, he quoted William Shakespeare: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” We must stay open to continuous learning, one of the 16 habits of mind, only through this can we succeed.
Larissa Tang:
In the morning, we went for the personal statement class. We had heard earlier that it was going to be writing essays, which honestly was not my favorite, so I thought it would be rather boring. Surprisingly, it turned out to be very interesting and I really appreciated the relaxing atmosphere in class. Professor Conrad was very nice and he came around the room to talk with us about what we wanted to learn in writing essay. He also got everyone involved in the class and there were interactions between teacher and students. I had also done the free writing which I had never tried before. The rule was that we could not stop writing during the ten minutes. I found myself thinking very slowly, so I would try to think faster next time in writing essays. In the afternoon, we went to SLAC. We were able to see some science equipments which fascinated us. The most important part was that we could meet Professor Martin Perl, who was the Nobel Prize winner in Physics in 1995. He was friendly and smart in the way he talked. We could also ask questions about his life! Although he got the Nobel Prize, he was not boasting about his successful discovery. Therefore, I also learnt to be humble. This day was a great learning day.
Linda Cheng:
We had the lecture about personal statement and visited SLAC today. We discussed about successes and problems as a writer and our expectations towards the personal statement with Dr. Conrad. We learnt about the writing process and what to think about when we are writing essays. The visit to SLAC was fun. Professor White is nice and told us a lot about SLAC. We also attended the talk conducted by Professor Martin Perl. He said that life does not always go the way you want. I learnt persistence from him.
Pinky Kwan:
We had a personal statement class in the morning with Dr. Scott-Curtis. I was afraid of writing long essays, so I was not looking forward to the lesson. However, Dr. Scott-Curtis was really kind and listened first to our thoughts about writing before teaching us. This helped me to understand my problems in writing. After that, he taught us some planning methods before writing. We tried free writing but I did not think it suits me, therefore, I would choose other methods when I do me personal statement. Then we visited the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre and met Professor Martin Perl, who had won the Noble Prize in 1995. He taught us about dark matter and energy and he was humorous. I enjoyed his talk and appreciated his persistence which is an essence to success. I should learn that from him and should not give up easily.
Rachel Kwan:
Today we had a writing lesson which mainly covered the writing of personal statement and SAT writing. Dr. Conrad taught us some writing skills. For example how to use a cluster map or mind map to develop an essay. He also gave us assignments so that we would be able to share on Monday’s lesson. After lunch, we took a bus to SLAC (a science laboratory). It was really big inside and we just walked part of SLAC. Then we had a meeting with Professor Martin Perl. He talked about dark matter during the seminar. I think it was our pleasure to have a meeting with Professor Martin. I enjoyed the seminar very much. After that, I think being a scientist is not easy. They have to do a lot work even they just do a simple experiment.
Renee Yeh:
I really think that the meeting with Professor Martin Perl, the Nobel Prize winner, was my highlight of the day. He really taught us a lot about dark matter and energy and why it is important to persevere in your work no matter what even when nobody else believes in you.
Rosa Li:
Today, we had our first lesson on writing personal statements. Since I am not particularly interested in writing, I was not really looking forward to it. However, after this lesson which Professor Scott-Curtis gave, my view towards writing changed. The professor taught us the first stage of the writing process, which is planning; and after a practice on free-writing, which I have never done before, I found out more about my weaknesses in writing. He also taught us to “show, don’t tell”, that is, we must always back up our statements with concrete examples. It was a great lesson and I hope my writing will really improve, as we still have two more writing lessons next week, which I am really looking forward to.
Selena Leung:
We attended a lesson on personal statement. During the lesson, we talked about the writing experience. The teacher, Dr. Conrad shared some writing skills with us and introduced his writing process to us. I personally do not write well before, so this helps me a lot. In the afternoon, we visited the SLAC and Dr. White led us to walk around. We met the 1995 Nobel Prize winner, Professor Martin Perl in the auditorium. He gave us a lecture about dark matter and dark energy. I think this is quite interesting and this helps my study of physics. Meeting such a great professor is an honour, and this encourages me to know more about science.
Stephanie Chow:
We first had an English writing lesson which was led by Dr. Scott-Curtis today. We discussed, learnt and practiced. His lessons aroused our interest in writing. He also introduced ways for us to practice writing. In the afternoon, we visited the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC). It was a laboratory for investigations on particle astrophysics and cosmology. The 1995 Noble Prize Winner Professor Martin Perl gave us a talk on Dark matter and energy. His persistence on scientific experiment and humbleness impressed all of us. “Professor Martin Perl is the treasure of SLAC.” Yes, I agree. Not only is his knowledge the treasure of SLAC, and also his attitude towards research.
Theodora Yu:
I really enjoyed the writing class on Friday with Dr. Conrad Scott-Curtis. He was very different from the teachers in Hong Kong: he was open to tell us some personal things about himself, for example, he was a dancer. He interviewed each of us so he could know our problems in writing.
Tiffany Tsah:
We had our personal statement lesson this morning. We learnt some techniques for starting and ending an essay. Besides, we had a chance to try free writing which helps us to brainstorm ideas for a composition. In the afternoon, we went to Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). We met Professor Martin who won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995. He presented his findings to us briefly and we had the chance to interview him. This is both a valuable and unforgettable experience to me.
Valerie Tang:
We took the personal statement class today and it was the most enjoyable lesson since I arrived in Stanford. Initially I am very interested in improving my writing skills, now that I’ve had the class, I understand more about how to write an essay that shows what kind of person you are, your values, your background etc. The free-writing part was also a lot of fun and I gained a lot in learning how to generate ideas.
Vicky Cheung:
I like both the visit to SLAC and the writing lesson with Dr. Conrad. However, my favorite part up to now is still the campus tour. Besides, I am also glad that I could be one of the students of Dr. Conrad who is a nice and helpful teacher. The beautiful places and friendly people make me like Stanford so much.
Victoria Chan:
I really like the visit to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre. It was fun to ride the bus to there. It passed through a lot of scenery and it was very nice. Sadly, we had no time to stay longer and the scientists cannot finish their talk. I hope we can hear more things about the Hong Kong scientists.
Victoria Kwok:
In the morning, we had attended a lesson on how to write our own personal statement. Before the lesson, I was worried because I do not know much vocabulary. In fact, Dr. Conrad is very nice and he taught us to do some preparations before writing. I think that free writing is very interesting because we can write what we wanted to say. If you cannot think of anything to write, you can write down “Oh my God” in your free writing. I hope that I can write well in my essays. In the afternoon, we went to SLAC and met with Dr. White. Dr.White led us to walk around SLAC and taught us things about physics and chemistry. Then, we met with Dr. Martin Perl in the auditorium. He gave us a talk. I agree with him that we should not easily give up when we do things or any experiments. If we have something that we don’t know, go and search for it.
